Vicky Holden finds herself in the middle of an adoption case of a white child that was abandoned on the reservation roughly five years ago. As soon as she is approached about assisting on the case the lead lawyer is killed in what's looks like an accident but Vicki isn't so sure. Although the lawyer wanted to bring her on he didn't leave any info as he kept everything locked in his own head. It will take Vicki every effort she has to see this through

Although she now has this tremendous weight upon her to find a way to keep this child with the only parents she has ever known it will lead her on a dangerous path towards a ruthless couple with no scruples of getting their way and having everyone stay out of their way. Also, she is actively seeking out a client that has ducked out of a plea bargain for an attempted robbery, her client on the run and in hiding so he doesn't have to go to rehab has secrets all on his own.

While all the turmoil of this adoption case is going on Father John has his niece come to visit, a history major who is doing her dissertation on a woman named Elizabeth Fletcher who was abducted by Cheyenne and found herself living as an Arapaho for the rest of her life. In the end all three stories will collide and Vicki will be left standing in the middle of it.

I loved how the history of Elizabeth Fletcher was brought to light and used to mirror the modern day story of Mary Ann Little Shield. It was nice to have that piece of history intertwined although not all of it fictional. I do love Vicki's character driven and aware she needs more in her life but her duty is in the way. I also felt the stories gave a real dramatic aspect to the story that made it truly compelling.
