When Sue Ellen a young woman with aspiring dreams and a bad marriage comes to China for help, China is apprehensive but this woman may be the answer to her mother's problems while her step-father recuperates. Feeling guilty at the same time that she may even be shunning her own duties as a daughter. While Sue Ellen reluctantly tells China the troubles her husband, Jack has involved himself in, they both realize she may be just as in trouble for her knowledge.
China is also in town to visit with her friend Mackenzie Chambers, a Game Warden in the area. At the same time Mack is investigating what could be the start of a huge smuggling case involving smuggling fawns and big antler bucks into Texas. Due to the threat of disease it has made it illegal but without these big antlered bucks men in the trophy hunting business wouldn't be in the competition.
Soon China sees that both are connected and before anything can be done it all comes to a tragic end.
I haven't read the China Bayle's Mysteries before and I am pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I love the fast pace writing, that the story seems to have a more ensamble cast of characters then just following the story of the lead character and how Ms. Wittig Albert brings her characters to life. I thoroughly enjoyed China and Mack as strong willed women as well.
I look forward to the next chapter in China Bayle's life, in Blood Orange. Review to be posted Wednesday April 27th.
