Author Appreciation Month: Featuring Meg London

Today we have a very talented author as our feature. Meg London, otherwise known as Peg Cochran, publishes the Sweet Nothings Mysteries. Set in Paris, Tennessee these mysteries are fashionable and fun!

About Murder Unmentionable:
Emma Taylor thought she knew what to expect when she abandoned life as a big-city fashionista to help her aunt, Arabella, breathe new style into Sweet Nothings, her waning lingerie boutique. As Emma settles back in to Paris, Tennessee—a world where pie is served with a parable and a pitcher of sweet tea is the cure for most of life’s ills—her escape seems smooth as silk.

But when the town acquires a touch of unneeded je ne sais quoi with the arrival of Emma’s philandering ex, an unseemly murder turns her world inside out. As the police’s top suspect, Emma is going to need more than fishnets to snare the real killer. And when she and Arabella refuse to let death threats wrapped in knifed nighties stall Sweet Nothings’ vintage lingerie fashion show, it becomes increasingly clear that any garter may hide a gun and that bullet bras might have to live up to their name…

She's the author of the Chili Cook-Off Mysteries, the Button Box Mysteries and the League of Literary Ladies Mysteries!!

About Mayhem at the Orient Express[summary via Amazon]
Most folks aren’t forced by court order to attend a library-book discussion group, but that’s just what happens to B and B proprietor and ex-Manhattanite Bea Cartwright, hippy cat lover Chandra Morrisey, and winery owner Kate Wilder after a small-town magistrate has had enough of their squabbling. South Bass, an island on Lake Erie, is home to an idyllic summer resort, but these three ladies keep disturbing the peace.

The initial book choice is Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, and that sets their mouths to watering. The Orient Express is the island’s newest Chinese restaurant. They might not agree about much, but the ladies all love the orange chicken on the menu. But their meal is spoiled when the restaurant’s owner, Peter Chan, has the bad fortune of getting murdered. Now, with Christie as their inspiration, the League of Literary Ladies has a real mystery to solve…if they can somehow catch a killer without killing each other first.

Book Review: Two Dogs Lie Sleeping by Lia Farrell

Title: Two Dogs Lie Sleeping
Author: Lia Farrell
Series: Book 2, Mae December Mysteries
Publisher: Camel Press
Format: eBook
Source: Received for Review from Author/Publisher
Reviewed by: Tess

What a great writing team of mom Lyn Farquhar and daughter Lisa Fitzsimmons who team up under the name of Lia Farrell.

Two Dogs Lie Sleeping is the 2nd book in their Mae December Mysteries. Set in Rosedale, Tn. we find Mae's sister July, under suspicion for the murder of her high school love, Tom Ferris. Tom dropped out of sight in his sophmore year of college and July had not seen him for 15 years.

July is putting the finishing touches on a room in Booth Mansion, that will soon be open to the public. As she works she hears a noise upstairs, running up the stairs, she hears the front door shut, who else has been there? As she reaches the nursery door, she sees a pile of rags lying there, on closer inspection she realizes it is a man, and that man is Tom Ferris. After calling 911, July rushes to his side and is holding his hand as he takes his last breath.

Sheriff Ben Bradley, Mae's boyfriend has more than his share of suspects, starting with July and then her husband Fred. But, why would July have killed the love of her life? Was Fred consumed with such jealous rage that he killed Tom? Or is it someone from their past? Ben has been pulled from the case because of the conflict of interest between his job ans his close relationship to the December family, but that doesn't stop him from working behind the scenes to bring peace to the family, and to mend his relationship with Mae.

A beautiful setting, likeable people, and several little dogs make this a book that I'm glad I read.

Author Appreciation Month: Featuring Madison Johns

Today we are showing our appreciation to a fabulous indie author, Madison Johns. Madison is the author of the hugely popular and funny Agnes Barton Senior Sleuths Mysteries.

About Armed and Dangerous:[summary from Amazon]

Agnes Barton is not your typical senior citizen living in Tadium, MI, on the shores of Lake Huron. She drives a red hot Mustang, shops at Victoria's Secret, rankles local police officials, and has a knack for sticking her nose where it doesn't belong.

What does a murder that happened forty-three years ago have to do with missing tourist Jennifer Martin? Agnes makes it her personal mission to find out, and she's not letting the fact she's seventy-two get in the way. Butting heads with Sheriff Clem Peterson is something she's accustomed to, but lately Clem seems to be acting even more strange, making Agnes wonder what he may be hiding ala the Martin disappearance.

Agnes’ partner in crime, Eleanor Mason tags along, Watson to her Holmes.
Together, they unearth clues. If only Eleanor would behave, as although lovable, she has a knack for getting into trouble by tangling with her rival, Dorothy Alton, or flirting with anyone—male or female—and gossiping! She's incorrigible, but she does carry a Pink Lady revolver in her purse, one that has proved useful at times.

Life for Agnes and Eleanor is shaken up when Agnes' former boss and secret crush comes to Tadium. Before long, the lady sleuths have more on their hands to contend with as goons roll into town and bullets begin to fly.

Madison Johns also writes the Kimberly Steele Cozy Mystery Series and the Cajun Cooking Mystery series.

About Homicide in Hardcover:
The streets of San Francisco would be lined with hardcovers if rare book expert Brooklyn Wainwright had her way. And her mentor wouldn’t be lying in a pool of his own blood on the eve of a celebration for his latest book restoration.

With his final breath he leaves Brooklyn a cryptic message, and gives her a priceless—and supposedly cursed—copy of Goethe’s Faust for safekeeping.

Brooklyn suddenly finds herself accused of murder and theft, thanks to the humorless—but attractive—British security officer who finds her kneeling over the body. Now she has to read the clues left behind by her mentor if she is going to restore justice…

Book Review: Small Town Spin by LynDee Walker

Title: Small Town Spin

Reviewed by: Tess

Summary:
When a superstar athlete's son turns up dead in a tiny town on the Virginia coast, crime reporter Nichelle Clarke gets the inside scoop. But she quickly spies a gaping hole her inner Lois Lane cannot ignore.

Determined to unravel the mystery, Nichelle fights off paparazzi cameras and an unexpected rival. She uncovers an illegal moonshine operation, a string of copycat suicides, and a slew of closets stacked with more skeletons than slingbacks. Chasing a killer who’s a breath from getting away with murder, Nichelle realizes too late the culprit has her number—and it might be up.

Tess' Thoughts:
Each in the series is a little bit better than the last. I can’t imagine where LynDee will take Nicey and her friends in the future. Nicey was once again her entertaining self as she worked to solve the murder of two young people. Book number four, Devil in the Deadline will be published in early 2015. Lyndee is also the author of Deadline Memphis which is included in the new book Heartache Motel, along with stories by Terry Austin and Larissa Reinhardt. Be sure to check it out. I hope everyone enjoys LynDee’s work as much as I do.

Two things that I greatly enjoy combined into one! Give me a cozy mystery that is also about food and I’m a happy girl. 30 years ago, teenaged Claire Jacobson, disappeared from Sandy Harbor and no further trace of her was ever recovered. Claire was a beautiful 17 year old, everyone seemed to love Claire. Everyone except 1 person that is. After a body was discovered in an old cave and found to be Claire, Trixie the new owner of The Silver Bullet restaurant and summer cottages finds herself remembering Claire and how kind she was to a young Trixie. Although only 10 at the time, Trixie has never been able to put Claire’s death out of her mind. When the murder of one of Trixie’s guests occurs in cabin 8, the same cabin that Claire and her family had stayed in, she is bound and determined to “help” the new county deputy, and her hunky neighbor Ty Briscoe solve not just the most recent death, but also the long ago murder of her friend Claire.

Set on the shore of beautiful Lake Ontario in upstate New York, Sandy Harbor is the perfect setting for this story of love, hate, life and unfortunately, murder. This is the second book in Christine’s Comfort Food Mystery series, I really enjoyed the 1st book, Do or Diner, but this one took me back to my good old days, when I was a teenager and we lived, year-round, very close to a lovely little lake in northern Illinois. This book would be a great summer read, so pull up an adirondack chair, put on flip flops and grab a sweet tea and be carried away to your “happy place” of days gone by.

Author Appreciation Month: Featuring Victoria Hamilton

Welcome back to another day of featuring our favourite authors. Today we are talking about the talented Victoria Hamilton and her series, the Vintage Kitchen Mysteries. I love a good culinary cozy mystery, so these mysteries are right up my alley.

About A Deadly Grind:[summary via Amazon]
A Hoosier to die for? When vintage cookware and cookbook collector Jaymie Leighton spies an original 1920s Hoosier brand kitchen cabinet at an estate auction, it’s love at first sight. Despite the protests of her sister that the 19th-century yellow-brick house they share in Michigan is already too cluttered with Jaymie’s “junk,” she successfully outbids the other buyers and triumphantly takes home her Hoosier.

But that night on the summer porch where they’ve left the Hoosier to be cleaned up, a man is murdered, struck on the head with the steel meat grinder that is part of the cabinet. Who is this stranger—and what was he doing on their porch? Does his death have anything to do with the Hoosier?

As the police struggle to determine the man’s identity, Jaymie can’t help doing a little digging on her own, accompanied by her three-legged Yorkie Poo, Hopalong. But in her bid to uncover the truth about the hidden secrets of the Hoosier, Jaymie may be the one who ends up going, going…gone.

Book Review: Unholy Matrimony by Peg Cochran

Title: Unholy Matrimony

Series: A Lucille Mystery
Publisher: Beyond the Page
Format: eBook
Source: Received for Review from Author
Reviewed by: Tess

Imagine, if you will, you are the mother of the bride, who happens to be 9 months pregnant and due any second. Not such a big day today, right? It is if you’re Lucille Mazzarella and still living in the past, and can’t quite accept the fact that this is pretty much a common thing. Bernadette, the pregnant bride, has thrown another wrench into the mix, the baby daddy is not even in the states but serving our country overseas. Taylor Grabowski may not be the best choice as the groom. But he is in the country and is willing to wed Bernadette, even knowing that he is not the baby daddy.

At the rehearsal dinner Lucille and Donna, the groom’s mother, have words that almost results in fisticuffs. The next day, Lucille finds Donna dead, in a pew in the front of the church. Of course, with Lucille being Lucille, she can’t seem to keep her nose out of the case, even though the new detective in town, Richie Sambucco, who happened to have lived and gone to school in town, and whom Lucille had a crush on as a teenager, tells her to mind her own business. Although Lucille is coming up with several suspects, she soon finds herself as the 1st suspect in Richie’s mind. Even though Donna’s husband is missing, and the groom seems to have gotten himself lost, how can anyone suspect Lucille?

I found this book very amusing, and it took me back to the days when we had neighbors like Lucille. I can almost see and hear her hanging out of a window screaming at the top of her lungs, and then Lucille wonders how everyone in the neighborhood knows her business.
