Top 5 Places to Visit in a Cozy Town with Meg London

My Favorite Places in Paris, Tennessee by Emma Taylor from the Sweet Nothings Lingerie Series by Meg London.

Paris is my hometown, and I’ve recently returned after several years in New York City. I’ve fallen in love with Paris all over again! These are some of my favorite places:

The Sweet Nothings Lingerie Shop: My Aunt Arabella owns the shop, and I helped her renovate it and get rid of all vestiges of the original 70s décor. It’s now as pretty as the inside of a chocolate box with pink paint, black and white toile furniture and some shabby chic accessories.

The Eiffel Tower: I know what you’re thinking—this isn’t Paris, France! But we have our own replica of the Eiffel Tower here, and I love that it reminds me of travel and foreign destinations.

Let Us Cater To You: My Aunt Lucy’s catering shop. It’s just a sliver of a space but Lucy creates marvelous things here. She has a few small tables up front where you can sit and sample things from her pastry case or chew on a couple of her famous cheese straws.

Sprinkles: I love my friend Bitsy’s cupcake shop. It smells heavenly when you walk in—like vanilla, sugar and spice. She makes cupcakes in so many delicious flavors—my favorite is the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.

Angel Cuts: I get my haircut here and Angel does a wonderful job. It’s also a great place to pick up gossip while having your nails done!

* These aren’t real places in Paris, TN, but ones I’ve created for the sake of the story.

** You can see some images I’ve collected of the places I imagine for my series by following me on Pinterest at pinterest.com/peglc. Or catch up with me on my web site: www.pegcochran.com.

Today's Indie Cozy Mystery Feature is Snowmen in Paradise by Kathi Daley.

About Snowmen in Paradise:
Winter Carnival comes to Serenity and with it Tj finds her schedule busier than ever. Not only is her ski and snowboard team heavily involved in demonstrations and local competitions, but her rag tag choir is about to debut in their first live performance. To make matters even more complicated Maude and Mille are in town for their wedding to Abe and Andy, and someone has killed Travis Davidson, a favorite town son, world-class snowboarder, and Olympic hopeful. Tj is determined not to get involved in the subsequent investigation until she finds out that the prime suspect in his murder is Chelsea Hanson, high school boyfriend Hunter Hanson’s sister. Although there is no shortage of Sereninites with a grudge against the hometown hero, even Tj has to admit that there is good cause to suspect Chelsea of the murder. Everyone saw Chelsea and Travis arguing just an hour prior to the discovery of his bloodied body. Everyone saw Chelsea storm off in the same direction in which Travis left the scene of the argument. The murder weapon turns out to be Chelsea’s ice axe, the same one she’d used just that afternoon for the ice climbing competition. To make matters worse Chelsea has no alibi for the time of Travis’ death. In spite of the fact that everything points to Chelsea Tj knows she couldn’t have done it. Balancing bridesmaid duties, Winter Carnival obligations, and show choir duty, with after-hours investigation, Tj sets out to prove Sheriff Boggs wrong.

What do you get when you mix five feisty senior citizens, three cooking contests, a top rated TV show, and a State Fair? You get Phyllis, Sam, Carolyn, Eve and Peggy, recipes for cookies, funnel cakes and Spam, a murder and fun, fun, fun.

This was such a great book to read. The gang travels to Dallas to the fair and stay with Carolyn's cousin Peggy. Instead of cooking against each other Phyllis and Carolyn decide to enter different cooking contests, Carolyn enters two cookie recipes, Phyllis tries her luck at funnel cake, which she has never made, and Sam enters the big Spam contest. When Phyllis is invited to appear on The Joye of Cooking show, everyone else goes with her for moral support. Little did they know that Phyllis will need more than moral support when someone dies right in front of her and all the audience members.

This is the 8th book in Livia Washburn's Fresh Baked Mysteries. Being a senior myself, it is such fun to read of the antics from members of fellow baby boomers. I'm pretty sure that you will enjoy all of the books in the series. All of the books are food based and contain yummy recipes.

To be able to read all the great books and then review them, what a wonderful thing!

This is the fourth book in the Haunted Home Renovation Mysteries. Mel is still managing the family construction business and might have decided that she does like doing it. Mel feels that it is time to give back to the community, by helping the elderly and handicapped reno their homes and make them safer and easier for them to handle. Mel and her dad challenge one another, to see who can complete their jobs first. Dad wins this one, but only because once again, Mel has discovered a body of a woman, who happens to be connected to the "mystery house" next door, where 25 years ago a man killed his eldest daughter, his wife, and then himself. The dead woman, Linda and her young brother were the only ones to survive. Of course Mel gets pulled into the case, this time by a police investigator, Annette. Mel and Annette are a great team and I think that we may be seeing more of Annette in the future.

All of our favorites people are around, and also Mel's sister Cookie pushes herself into the middle of everything and even though she is the older sister, she behaves like a child insisting that she go every where with Mel. Even to a ghost busting class that Mel goes to.

Juliet is the author of another series, the Witchcraft Mysteries, which I find equally appealing. If you haven't yet discovered Juliet, this is the perfect time to do it, run to your local bookstore or your library and grab one of Juliet's books, I don't think you'll regret it!

Book Review: The Missing Dough by Chris Cavender

Title: The Missing Dough
Author: Chris Cavender
Series: Book 6 of Pizza Lovers Mysteries
Publisher: Kensington
Format: Paperback
Source: Received for Review from Publisher
Reviewed by: Tess

Publisher's Summary:
The only thing Eleanor Swift loves more then A Slice of Delight--her Timber Ridge, North Carolina pizzeria--is her sister Maddy. So when Maddy's cheating ex-husband Grant shows up with some pie-in-the-sky idea to win Maddy back, Eleanor is happy to see her sister swiftly show him the door. But they both know Grant isn't done yet. . .

Our Review:
Chris writes many books under a couple of different names, and I have always enjoyed his work, be it series' about soap making, candle making, light houses or pizza parlors.

This one is about Eleanor, who owns the pizza parlor and Maddy, # 1 assistant, side-kick detective, and most importantly sister. When Maddy's obnoxious ex-husband, Grant turns up dead, the sisters and their boy friends end up being the main suspects. The girls and their guys go to a festival in their town of Timber Ridge, NC and run into Grant, who is not only obnoxious, now he is drunk and belligerent. Eleanor and Maddy, as usual, promise David and Bob that they will stay out of Grant's death, but that lasts about a nano-second. At times it seems as if the girls have more sources than the police do. Top cop Kevin Hurley, Eleanor's high school sweetheart, knows it is almost impossible for Eleanor and Maddy to sit back and leave the case to the police. Coming face to face with other suspects, lead the sisters on another of their dangerous, but fun filled investigations. This is a quick and fun read and I look forward to the next book.

Giveaway: The Spook Lights Affair by Marcia Muller & Bill Pronzini

Today we're giving away a hardback of The Spook Lights Affair by Marcia Muller & Bill Pronzini, courtesy of Tor Forge Publishers.

About The Spook Lights Affair:
In 1895 San Francisco young debutantes don’t commit suicide at festive parties, particularly not under the eye of Sabina Carpenter. But Virginia St. Ives evidently did, leaping from a foggy parapet in a shimmer of ghostly light. The seemingly impossible disappearance of her body creates an even more serious problem for the firm of Carpenter and Quincannon, Professional Detective Services.

Sabina hadn’t wanted to take the assignment, but her partner John Quincannon insisted it would serve as entrée to the city’s ultra rich and powerful. That means money, and Quincannon loves the almighty dollar. Which is why he is hunting the bandit who robbed the Wells, Fargo office of $35,000.

Working their separate cases (while Sabina holds John off with one light hand), the detectives give readers a tour of The City the way it was. From the infamous Barbary Coast to the expensive Tenderloin gaming houses and brothels frequented by wealthy men, Quincannon follows a danger-laden trail to unmask the murderous perpetrators of the Wells, Fargo robbery. Meanwhile, Sabina works her wiles on friends and relatives of the vanished debutante until the pieces of her puzzle start falling into place. But it’s an oddly disguised gent appearing out of nowhere who provides the final clue to both cases—the shrewd “crackbrain” who believes himself to be Sherlock Holmes.

Fans of Marcia’s Muller’s bestselling Sharon McCone novels and Bill Pronzini’s Nameless Detective series will applaud The Spook Lights Affair and future exploits from the annals of Carpenter and Quincannon, Professional Detective Services.

Book Review: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

Publisher's Summary:
Orphan Train is a gripping story of friendship and second chances from Christina Baker Kline, author of Bird in Hand and The Way Life Should Be.

Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to “aging out” out of the foster care system. A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse... As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance.

Molly discovers that she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her for her entire life – answers that will ultimately free them both. Rich in detail and epic in scope, Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline is a powerful novel of upheaval and resilience, of unexpected friendship, and of the secrets we carry that keep us from finding out who we are.

Our Review:
Although I am not a reader of most fiction books, the Orphan Trains from the late 1800s through early 1900s, have always intrigued me. When I saw a short piece about this book, I knew I had to read it. The heartbreaking ordeals that these children went through was shocking! How could we, as a country, allow this to happen to innocent children? I don't mean the trains themselves, I think if they had been run differently this would have been a blessing to the children. But the abuse that was piled on them was unfathomable! No school, barely any food, beatings by the hands of people who were supposedly going to protect them. How did this happen?

The book itself did a wonderful job of defining the connection of two entirely different orphaned children. One from the original train and the other from 2011. Though the children were a century apart the circumstances they endured were very similar. Vivian and Molly, such different beings, are connected as few others could be. You will laugh, you will cry, you will shudder at the images that Ms. Kline gives us. But in the end you will most likely cheer and yell, hooray for the good guys!
